Recipe: Superfood Smoothie Bowl

This has been my go-to first meal of the day for years. It’s a great way to densely pack nutrients into a single meal. It’s delicious, and is the perfect way to break my fast (I’ve also done intermittent fasting for years- more on that in the next post)! I crave it every day.

Ingredients:

½ cup fresh or frozen berries
berries are high in antioxidants and anti-inflammatory and are good for the immune system, liver, brain, and cancer prevention

1 ripe banana (you can use less-ripe too; it will be thicker and not as sweet)
Potassium, vitamin C, vitamin B6

1 handful spinach, kale, or whichever greens you have on hand (I’ve used lettuce in a pinch)
High in many nutrients including calcium, iron, magnesium, potassium, folate, and protein.

1-2 dates
High in fiber and nutrients, natural sweetener

1 tablespoon ground flaxseeds
Omega-3s, fiber, cancer-reducing lignans

1 inch fresh turmeric
Anti-inflammatory

Pinch of black pepper

½ teaspoon maca powder
Regulates hormones, increases energy, high in nutrients

1 tablespoon cacao powder
Iron, fiber, magnesium, supports brain health

A few shakes of cinnamon

Unsweetened protein powder (optional)

2 tablespoons yogurt
